Culture Agency Supervises Archaeological Excavation on Jalan Tongkol

Jakarta Culture Agency supervised and controlled the archaeological excavation process which carried out on Jalan Tongkol No. 10, Ancol, North Jakarta.

This research is needed that development doesn't neglect the historical value that exists in the location

Excavation was carried out to protect cultural heritage of Kasteel Batavia because Jakarta Public Housing and Settlement (PRKP) Agency planned to build Kampung Tongkol Public Housing (Rusun) in the area.

Jakarta Culture Agency's Cultural Heritage Conservation Center Head, Linda Enriany mentioned, Kampung Tongkol Public Housing will be built in cultural heritage area. Thus it is necessary to study it first by carrying out archaeological excavation.

She explained that archaeological excavation is needed to ensure whether there are findings on the land or not as regulated in Article 86 of Law No. 11/2010 concerning Cultural Heritage, where there is any utilization that can cause damage should be preceded by study, research, and analysis of environmental impacts.

"Regional government, through its levels, has duties and authorities to carry out research on cultural heritage development. This research is needed that development doesn't neglect the historical value that exists in the location," she asserted, Tuesday (4/27).

According to her, archaeological excavation was carried out by Jakarta PRKP Agency in collaboration with Archaeological Excavation Team from Universitas Indonesia. Technically, excavation was carried out at several points where it was suspected as locations of the remains Kasteel Batavia building.

"After excavation, the result will be reviewed by Cultural Heritage Expert Team who will recommend efforts that should be done to protect Kasteel Batavia," she conveyed.
